TAKING ON THE HILLS: DUMFRIESSHIRE AUTHOR LAUNCHES NEW OUTDOORS BOOK
Gatelawbridge, Dumfriesshire- based Ronald Turnbull launches his latest walking guide at Thomas Tosh in Thornhill this coming Wednesday (10th July). His new book—The Hillwalking Bible--is aimed at inspiring both novice and experienced walkers looking to get the most out of the outdoors.
And at the launch, Ronald will share his experience and insight with an illustrated talk on walking in Dumfries & Galloway and the wider world.
Ronald has written a range of nationally respected walking books, including guides to the Southern Uplands, and Galloway Hills. In The Hillwalking Bible, Ronald brings together a lifetime of expert knowledge aimed to improve people’s walks, big or small, with advice on scrambling, walking with children and dogs, and dealing with different weather conditions and emergencies.
This instructional manual gives a complete rundown on the gear you need and how to navigate with a compass, map and mobile phone. It includes advice on where and when to go, long distance walking, backpacking, wild camping, and walking abroad.
The Southern Uplands features in the book. And the local hills played their part in inspiring Ronald to write his guide. Ronald recalls talking to a neighbour who enjoyed running in Mid Nithsdale lanes, but was put off venturing into the Uplands overlooking where they lived, because of a lack of confidence and a fear of getting lost.
Ronald says:
“Mostly I want to pass on the skills to let you explore on your own. Make up a route line off the map, find your way along it with your compass and your mobile phone, make a few mistakes, and still get back to the tea shop in time for tea.
“And if you are a novice, my first hope is get you out of the house and walking up some small hill or maybe along the top of a seacliff or any part of open country that is easy to get to starting from where you are. The idea is about finding out the fun you can have.”
As Ronald says:
“Walking in the hills and wild places isn’t just about the benefits to your physical and mental health. It isn’t just about the summit photo for your Instagram. It’s about those things, yes. But it’s also about the freedom of the hills. Finding your own way, taking yourself a little farther and widening your horizons.Because I am not going to spot that Southern Uplands Eagle unless I get up there on the Southern Uplands!”
The free event starts at 7.30pm, with complimentary drinks and nibbles. And Ronald will be signing copies of his book.
